Magnetic Nanoparticles
Scientists, particularly in the field of materials science, have shown significant interest in the properties of magnetic materials at the nanometer scale, with life scientists also benefiting from nanomagnets. Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles are distinct from other nanomaterials, as their fundamental magnetic properties are defined at the nanoscale, allowing for measurements ranging from a micrometer to a few nanometers in size. These nanoparticles are among the most promising substances for clinical diagnostic and therapeutic applications (theranostics).
Compared to other nanomaterials, iron oxide nanoparticles are typically coated with inorganic materials like silica, or organic substances such as fatty acids and phospholipids or other metallic substances such as Gold and Silver. They can be directed to specific active sites using an external AC magnetic field, making them highly attractive for biomedical applications.
